Air Fluidized Therapy Benefits
Air Fluidized Therapy beds, also commonly known as “sand beds,” are filled with silicone-coated microspheres that resemble fine white sand. Circulating warm air through these microspheres creates a dynamic, fluid-like environment that supports the patient’s body. This fluid support prevents the formation of pressure ulcers and accelerates wound healing by reducing mechanical stress from friction and shear. AFT’s varying airflow rates also prevent bacterial growth by controlling heat and humidity.
Traditional solid surfaces and standard air cushions only provide partial pressure relief. Air fluidized beds offer even pressure distribution across the patient’s entire body. The shoulders, heels, elbows, and other bony prominences are supported to prevent further tissue damage.
